When those who have served take an oath to defend the Constitution, it is a lifetime commitment. At this moment in our democracy, veterans across the country are honoring their oath in new ways: working to prevent the unconstitutional use of military force against the American people, training communities to recognize and resist political violence, and showing up at polling places to make sure every eligible voter celebrates their right to vote and feels safe casting a ballot.
INSURRECTION ACT
A healthy democracy depends on a clear line between the military that defends the country and the civilian institutions that govern it. The Insurrection Act is the law that lets a president erase that line, deploying active-duty troops to police American communities instead of foreign adversaries. It hands sweeping powers to the executive branch, suspends long-standing legal protections, and puts soldiers trained for combat in the position of controlling the people they swore an oath to protect. Crossing that line, even once, makes it easier to cross again.

Political violence and repression are tools of authoritarian control — designed to spread fear, silence dissent, and undermine democracy. The Harnessing Our Power to End Political Violence (HOPE) initiative equips communities across the country with the knowledge, skills, and tools to respond nonviolently and collectively. Through training, resource sharing, and storytelling, HOPE helps everyday people protect their communities and strengthen democracy from the ground up.
Voting is one of our most important shared American traditions. But too often the environment around elections feels tense, confusing, or unwelcoming — and eligible voters stay home. Project HALO brings veterans, faith leaders, legal professionals, and community members together to create a visible, celebratory, nonpartisan presence around elections — so every voter feels safe, confident, and supported. HALO turns Election Day back into what it should be: a moment worth showing up for.
